Last week I told you I had to go to Boston to speak at Inbound (Hubspot's conference) and how I hate being away from family. In case you want more complaining, I also hate flying.

My family has this guy named Shah. He was our Uber driver once. He has a minivan with car seats so now he drives us to the airport for $175.

I paid him $1,300 to drive me to and from Boston same day.

People have an image in their head when I say I have a driver. But it's really just my boy Shah in a minivan who wears a track suit with Pumas.

I gave a talk in Boston called Be Chalant: The Art of Giving a Damn.

The summary is when I was 16 I couldn’t get a girlfriend because I looked (and acted) like Napoleon Dynamite.

So I read every pick up artist book on earth. My takeaway from those book was to be “cool” and act like I don’t care. That was dumb (and I got no girls).

So in my 20’s when I started my first company, I began openly showing more enthusiasm. People were more attracted to me. Investors. Employees. Customers. Everyone.

I even used my love of denim to pick up my wife (Mel Robbins talked about that story on her podcast, so I’m a love expert now).

I’ll tell you the lessons another time if you want (reply and ask and I’ll know people want it).

But the summary is this: enthusiasm is the act of showing how passionate you are about something. It can be anything. Money. Nerd stuff. ANYTHING. Enthusiasm is a deadly weapon when it comes to attraction. And if you intend to do anything important in life…you need to attract people to your cause.

Be chalant. “Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.”

Cool stuff I’m consuming:

• Joe Hudson on MFM (podcast): The most impactful podcast I’ve done in 6 months. Try this experiment: every time you do something this week, do something that’ll make you enjoy it just 10% more. Very actionable.
• Confessions of a Hectomillionaire. Part 1: Introduction (post): The FatFire subreddit changed my life. Great series of posts about a guy worth $100m and how he manages stuff.
• Teddy Atlas is the best corner man (video): Atlas was Mike Tyson’s corner. He gives the best speeches to his boxers. “We can bring your father back tonight. You know why? Because they're going to talk about his son, the new world champion. And when they talk about him, they're going to be thinking about his father.”
• Coach Zahabi on fear and anxiety (video): George St. Pierre’s coach (greatest UFC fighter ever) explains how he calms his fighter before a fight. My favorite technique he mentions: visualizing the fight weeks out. Practice the walkout so it feels real. Play the opponents walk out song so all senses are impacted. For us yuppies: imagine the conference room where you’re delivering bad news to someone. Go there and practice.
• Empire of the Elite: Inside Condé Nast (book). Sam Newhouse grew a tiny newspaper to a multi-billion dollar company. He had no office, no headquarters, no assistant, and no files, running the whole thing from a beat-up briefcase in the back seat of a Cadillac. Imagine a $1 billion company with a CEO like that. Eventually bought Vanity Fair and created 80’s elite culture. I have a fetish for old money culture and family dynasty businesses.
• Man walks around NYC getting people to rap (reel): He makes beats on the spot. I love him.
• Girlfriend: my bf’s prolly cheating on me. What he’s really doing (reel): But seriously how do you think they found this many dope looking gay dudes in 1970’s College Station, Texas in order to film this.
• "In this world, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant. For years I was smart. I recommend pleasant." (reel)
• A Basic Shirt Wardrobe, Part Two (blog post): Dieworkwear is the best when it comes to writing stuff that’s both useful and beautiful (even if the topic bores you).
• Beautiful writing (article): "Anytime my father wears a turtleneck, he is advancing a cause, and the cause is himself." Just read an old article on why turtlenecks are great. That's one of the attributes of great writing: whether the topic interests you or not, the words grab your attention, make you feel, and sits with you for months after.

Someone once told me: you're as happy as your most unhappy kid. I just saw that Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber's kid (Presley) just passed away. He was 27 and a drug addict and died while in rehab. Very sad.

I know a handful of very rich and successful people who also have drug addict kids. It's horrible because you are basically watching your kids die slowly. And any success that they have, its just muted. It means little when you have an unhappy or unhealthy family member.

Reminds me that the "rich life", something that I strive for daily, money, fame, and all that other bullshit isn't the most important thing. Having a home full of healthy kids who love you and a healthy body and mind is far more important.

Get your relationships right. Reminder to myself, really.

How to be found

An Eagle Scout knows the number one rule after getting lost in the woods is to STOP.

Don’t walk around. Stay put. The odds of being found are much higher if you wait to be found vs wandering around.

And dare I say: one should do the same thing when lost in life.

For the first time in 10 years I’ve started reading some self-help books because I’m trying to figure stuff out. Good grief, I can’t believe I even admitted that.

nd the number one takeaway I have after reading a few is that I should be more like an Eagle Scout.

Stop wandering around seeking an answer. The answer to my fears…they will present themselves inevitably. But wandering around seeking just lowers the odds that I’ll ever find it.
